Lisbon is Portugal's capital and a city with sights for everyone.

With its roots in the pre-historic era and officially a Portuguese city since 1256, Lisbon has been influenced by many cultures over the course of millennia and this shows throughout the city, namely in its historic neighborhoods. Although it is the most populous city in Portugal with 540,000 inhabitants (2.8 mln. in the metropolitan area), it is relatively small but still offers so much to see!

There are historic neighborhoods with narrow streets such as Alfama and Castelo where the 2000 year old Castelo de São Jorge is located, wide avenues reminiscent of the Champs-Élysées such as the Avenida da Liberdade, monumental areas such as Belém with its UNESCO monuments, modern buildings and leisure spaces such as those found in Parque das Nações, buzzing nightlife in old neighborhoods like Bairro Alto and, to top it off, beautiful sand beaches twenty minutes away in Estoril and Cascais.

In short, Lisbon offers sights and activities for all types of travellers. It is ideal for a stay of a few days or as a base for travel to the rest of the country.
