Cristo Rei
We begin our tour at Cristo Rei, a slightly smaller replica of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, located across the Tagus river from Lisbon and standing at 104m of height. It was built in 1959, thanking god for sparing Portugal during World War II. The terrace is accessible by elevator and offers an amazing view of the 25 de Abril bridge, the Tagus, Lisbon, Arrábida mountains, and, on clear days, Sintra.
Convento de Jesus de Setubal
We continue our tour by visiting Convento de Jesus, one of the architectonic wonders of Setúbal. This church was built in 1491 by Diogo de Boitaca (known for his work in the Jerónimos Monastery) and is one of the first examples of manueline style. It features spiral towers, columns made in marble from the Arrábida mountains and gargoyles.
Praça do Bocage / lunch
Praça do Bocage is the most central plaza of Setúbal, featuring a statue of Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, considered one of the best Portuguese poets. You will have time to take a walk around the center and have lunch or a snack before we continue.
7ª Bataria do Outão
We will stop for a quick visit to this coastal artillery base which was decommissioned in 1998. Due to its mission of providing protection to the Sado river and the Setúbal port, it offers a fantastic view of the Atlantic, Tróia and the Sado estuary.
Forte de Santa Maria da Arrábida
The Santa Maria da Arrábida fort is a small maritime fortification of baroque architecture, which was built in 1670 to defend Portinho da Arrábida and the convent.
Lagoa de Albufeira
This lagoon is surrounded by pine trees and fed by freshwater from 3 small rivers and also saltwater from the Atlantic during the summer. At 15m of depth, Lagoa de Albufeira is the deepest lagoon in Portugal. We'll stop for a walk around the lagoon and beach and some pictures.
